Introduction
What is tarot?
Tarot is a tool that’s used for divination (fortune telling) – predicting future events or eliciting information by supernatural means. Tarot has been used for centuries – the first recorded reference to tarot cards was in the late 14th century. It is thought that they may originally have been used for Gnostic purposes, i.e. eliciting divine knowledge through the realm of the spiritual, but became used by followers of astrology and the occult after being denounced by the Christian church.
During a tarot fortune telling reading, the deck is shuffled and the cards subsequently laid out on a table. The pattern and sequence of the cards are interpreted in order to determine an individual’s fortune. Different tarot readers have their own interpretations and meanings for the symbols and a reading is therefore very personal and intuitive.
